Copenhagen’s Værk restaurant is one of Copenhagen’s most prestigious and pleasant places to dine. Chef Michael has spent seven years building its reputation. At the cost of a non-existent personal life, healthy relationships and no activities outside the restaurant. When the female manager decides to hire the ambitious young Naja as sous-chef, it seems Michael’s current style of work will have to make way for a new, empathetic co-existence between all the staff where there is no stress, no shouting and no glass ceilings for women. Only Michael is not about to just give up and decides to compete fiercely with the harmonious Naja, who has her own blind spots. Will Værk become a restaurant for the 21st century, will Michael retain his boomer status, or will both Michael and Naja have to rethink their ideas of the restaurant ideal and work commitment? This comedy aptly sums up today’s ubiquitous debates about male and female roles, gender wars and arguments about what we need empathy and a new sensibility for in the workplace, for example.
