“I am ashamed to be European. I am ashamed to be a Finn, “says the diplomat Anni-Mari Sundell at the NATO summit after it comes out that the Finns are secretly selling weapons to Saudi Arabia. The government then terminates her contract and opens an investigation against her, at the same time the heroine earns the biggest task of her career with that: to secure a peace treaty between the Turks and the Kurds. But in the end the biggest challenge for her is the need to solve her personal life – as the peace process complicates her own past. A sophisticated and visually striking political drama with elements of a political thriller and an unusual protagonist takes place in Syria, Turkey and Spain and focuses on the negotiation process and on relations between high-ranking people of international politics. After last year’s series Invisible Heroes, Peacemaker is another ambitious Finnish attempt to move away from detective stories typical of northern Europe.
