This British series, a collaboration between the BBC and Paramount+, which made it last year to the rankings of the best of the world, is set in a time when thieves were still robbing the old-fashioned way. Simply by taking physical money – in this case, gold bars, diamonds and banknotes. The legendary Heathrow Airport robbery in 1983, which saw the disappearance of around £111 million worth of today’s money, was at the time the largest such crime in history. The chain of people who made it possible was unprecedentedly long and complicated, and to “melt” the money in circulation, the bricks actually had to be physically melted down over time. The Gold is, without exaggeration, a fascinating true story that shows that when money is abundant, people cease to matter – the driving force is the money itself. Among other things, this has funded the transformation of a well-known London borough, Docklands. Britain’s favourite “brown and grey retro” is a thrilling and complex spectacle with superbly written characters. It tells of the power of money, the class structure of Thatcherite Britain and some remarkable human characters. A second season premiere is currently awaiting announcement.
