“You know, we love ethics. All that ethical stuff….we’re a fan of it. But…” says one of the characters in the now spectacularly rude satirical sitcom set in high British politics. That is to say, from the offices of politicians frequented by the defining force of the Prime Minister’s cabinet – his spin doctor. Above all, one must not upset him if one is to survive in office. And the new Secretary of State for Social Affairs and Citizenship knows this all too well. The Thick of It was created in the noughties in the wake of the legendary Yes Minister. The series made Armando Ianucci globally famous, who later added the movie In the Loop and later The Death of Stalin, and overseas he created the now also very famous Veep. The screenplays were co-written by Jesse Armstrong, among others, now best known for Succession. The Thick of It may be even more shocking today for its directness, but it also fascinates with its courage and its ability to fill the room with characters thinking like the worst people on the planet, and have them fire off one memorable line after another.
