The Zweiflers own a well-known kosher delicatessen and restaurant in Frankfurt that has been feeding their entire family for generations. But at the beginning of the story, set in present-day Germany, the patriarch of the family decides to sell the business, thus taking the land from under his children’s feet. The younger generation, on the other hand, is completely calm, caring about things other than the tradition of the family business – and this soon proves to be the bigger problem. A brilliant comedic family drama about a past that influences the present too much, some have dubbed it “the German Succession,” while the makers claim to have been inspired by the famous Sopranos and the opportunity to show something other than concentration camps or Woody Allen-style humour in a story about a Jewish family. In fact, the story of an attempt to achieve individual happiness in a family intertwined by close relationships and burdened by tradition is so original that it does not need comparisons with other works to succeed. The Zweiflers won the Best Series award at Cannes, and the series will undoubtedly draw in audiences around the world – thanks in part to a great cast, including Aaron Altaras, best known for the Netflix series Unorthodox.
