It is 1999. Big things may be happening elsewhere, but in this scruffy Danish suburb, the only thing to do today is go to a party. There is uncertainty, boredom and emptiness in the air. When teenagers Lukas and Kris discover the next day that their brooding friend Alex has disappeared, it becomes clear that none of the locals will try to rescue him and solve the mystery. Except perhaps the father of one of them, a local policeman. The stylish Danish detective drama combines, according to its creator, the mystery of Stephen King and the sense of adventure of The Famous Five. Series viewers will see similarities to hits like Stranger Things and echoes of older cult titles in this skillfully shot retro title. Despite its iconicity, Nordland ’99 holds its originality as it tells the urgent story of several characters who need to find more than just Alex. A potential new European “niche” hit.
