Helsinki Syndrome (Helsinki-syndrooma)

Origin and Year: Finland, 2022 Director: Juuso Syrjä
Runnning time: 2 x 50 min

The Finnish drama brilliantly combines the Finnish present with the past in the character of Elias, who decides to capture several journalists from a respected Helsinki daily newspaper right inside the newsroom. His aim is to get them to work on a text that would expose the Finnish recession in the 1990s, which plunged a part of the population into unpayable debt. Elias himself and his family are victims. While politicians repeat platitudes that covid aid must be fair and for all, it is because of old debts caused by the banking crisis decades ago that he is being denied aid. And since he does not have many options left, he opts for the most extreme one.
